About Autism in Action®
Autism In Action® was founded in 2001 by Dr. Beverly Braman (BCBA-D) and Dr. Susan Catlett (BCBA-D). Their goal is to help parents, teachers, and others who participate in the lives of individuals diagnosed with autism and related disorders learn how to use applied behavior analysis (ABA) as a part of everyday life.
Together, Dr. Braman and Dr. Catlett have spent more than 50 years working directly with thousands of individuals who have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in their homes, classrooms, and communities. Both extensively trained in ABA, their vision for Autism In Action® is to bring ABA from the clinical setting to real life settings by helping parents and educators better understand exactly what ABA is and how to do it.
In 2000, Dr. Braman and Dr. Catlett began developing the Autism “How-To” Teaching Programs by writing down what they said and did everyday in the classrooms and homes of children with autism. Now used by educators and parents around the world, these step by step teaching programs have gained popularity because they are effective, easy to understand for those who do not have extensive training in ABA, and realistic considering real life constraints.
In 2004, Dr. Braman and Dr. Catlett developed the Instructional Objectives Handbook to help teachers save time writing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and simplify data collection. With more than 200 measurable objectives to supplement the general education curriculum, educators world- wide are using this resource to write IEPs for individuals with autism and related disorders that are meaningful, accountable, and easy to measure for demonstrating progress.
In 2007, Autism In Action® released the Autism and ABA: A “How-To” Handbook for Teachers to help build ABA capacity in the school setting. With definitions, procedures, and examples written in the language of teachers, thousands of educators across the U.S. and abroad who work with children on the autism spectrum are building their knowledge of ABA and coming to understand that it is the art of good teaching.
